About the book

Locs Like Mine is the story of a young girl who demonstrates self-confidence, high self-esteem and persistence as she characterizes beauty by her own definition. As a child and adolescent therapist serving emotionally troubled youth, Parker recognized the impact that low self-esteem had on African-American girls. As a mother of two young daughters, she also understands the influence that media has in defining beauty.

Locs Like Mine was created to encourage girls to express themselves as confident, young females with pride in their ethnicity, unique features and natural beauty. Parker’s personal mission is to counter the beauty standards and images characterized by mainstream society by providing positive stories and representations that reflect the innate splendor of the African-American female.

The book follows Jasman’s journey from her repeated pleads to get her hair locked, skeptical parents, criticism and discouragement from friends to finally having her request granted as a result of persistence and self determination. The book also features important definitions related to self-esteem, discussion questions for children, words of affirmation and parent tips for developing self-esteem in females.

Mrs. Parker completed her undergraduate studies at Bowie State University with a Bachelor’s in Social Work. She also earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland. Parker is the mother of four children, and resides in Southern Maryland.

Locs Like Mine is one of many books to come. Readers can look forward to a series filled with Jasman’s wonderful and sometimes challenging adventures through childhood.
